Material Overview
PPS plastic — polyphenylene sulfide — is a semi-crystalline high-performance thermoplastic that combines outstanding resistance to chemicals, fuels, and solvents with excellent thermal stability and dimensional precision. PPS material is specified wherever both chemical aggression and elevated temperature service requirements must be met simultaneously — a combination that rules out most standard engineering thermoplastics.
PPS exhibits virtually no known organic solvent attack at temperatures below approximately 200 °C, making it one of the most chemically inert melt-processable engineering polymers available. It maintains low moisture absorption and excellent dimensional stability in harsh environments, and performs reliably under continuous heat without significant mechanical property degradation. Its semi-crystalline structure provides predictable, stable behavior across the operating temperature range.
Typical applications include pump bodies, valve components, chemical processing fixtures, automotive fuel system parts, and precision structural components operating in aggressive fluid environments. PPS is also widely used in electrical and electronic applications where resistance to chemicals and heat must coexist with good insulation properties.
For applications requiring maximum stiffness in reinforced form, see PPS GF40 — the 40% glass-fiber-reinforced grade. Visit the PPS product page for stock information and to request a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) is a semi-crystalline high-performance thermoplastic with outstanding resistance to chemicals, fuels, and solvents combined with good thermal stability and dimensional precision. It is widely used in pump bodies, valve components, chemical processing fixtures, and automotive parts operating in aggressive environments.
PPS GF40 is reinforced with 40% glass fiber, which dramatically increases stiffness and reduces creep under load compared to unfilled PPS. Unfilled PPS offers better toughness and easier machining. Choose PPS GF40 when maximum rigidity and structural performance under high load and heat are required.
PPS and PEEK both offer excellent chemical resistance, but PPS has broader resistance to organic solvents at moderate temperatures and is generally less expensive. PEEK offers higher continuous service temperature and better impact toughness. For chemical-resistant applications below PEEK's temperature threshold, PPS is often the more economical choice.

Yes. PPS machines well on conventional CNC equipment with carbide tooling. Its semi-crystalline structure provides consistent chip formation and good dimensional accuracy. Pre-annealing is recommended for tight-tolerance components.
