Material Overview
Nylon material — the polyamide (PA) family of engineering thermoplastics — combines mechanical strength, wear resistance, toughness, and low friction in a lightweight, machinable form. Ready Plastics stocks a full line of nylon plastic grades in sheet and rod, from workhorse PA6 to high-heat PPA, giving engineers a single source for every polyamide requirement.
Across all grades, nylon plastic delivers good impact resistance, dimensional stability under mechanical stress, and reliable chemical resistance in both dry and moderately humid environments. These properties make nylon the go-to material for bushings, gears, wear pads, rollers, and structural components where long-term performance matters. Self-lubricating behavior in many grades reduces maintenance by allowing dry running in moving assemblies.
Grade overview. The extruded nylon family at Ready Plastics spans five base grades. PA6 is the versatile workhorse — strong, tough, and highly machinable. PA66 steps up strength and heat resistance for demanding structural use. PA12 minimizes moisture absorption for tight-tolerance precision parts. PA612 balances strength with intermediate moisture performance. PPA (polyphthalamide) leads the family in thermal and mechanical performance for high-temperature applications.
Choosing the right grade. For the highest strength-to-weight with wear focus, start with PA6 or PA66. Where dimensional stability in humid environments is critical, PA12 or PA612 offer lower moisture uptake. Modified variants — MoS2-filled MOLY grades, oil-filled grades, glass-fiber GF30, and carbon-fiber CF50 — add targeted performance for friction, stiffness, or load. For large-section parts requiring the highest load-bearing capability, see Ready Plastics' cast nylon offering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Nylon is a synthetic thermoplastic in the polyamide (PA) family, produced by the polymerization of synthetic resins. It offers high mechanical strength, low friction, good wear resistance, and toughness, making it one of the most widely used engineering plastics for gears, bushings, bearings, wear pads, and structural components.
PA6 and PA66 are both common nylon grades. PA66 offers higher tensile strength, greater stiffness, and better heat resistance than PA6, making it suited for more demanding structural and thermal applications. PA6 is tougher and more impact-resistant, and is the basis for cast nylon. Both are machinable and widely stocked by Ready Plastics.
Ready Plastics stocks PA6, PA66, PA12, PA612, and PPA as extruded base grades, along with modified variants including PA6 MOLY, PA6 OIL, PA66 MOLY, PA66 GF30, PA12 CF50, and PPA CF50. Cast nylon (PA 6) is also available as a separate family for high-load applications.
Yes. Nylon is highly machinable on conventional shop equipment. It drills, mills, turns, and saws cleanly, producing tight tolerances suitable for precision components. Sharp tooling and moderate speeds are recommended to prevent heat buildup.
Yes. Nylon and polyamide (PA) refer to the same family of materials. Nylon is the common commercial name; polyamide is the chemical family designation. Different grades — PA6, PA66, PA12, PA612, PPA — denote distinct chemistries within the polyamide family, each with its own strength, thermal, and moisture-absorption profile.
