Material Overview
What is HDPE?
HDPE plastic — high-density polyethylene — is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic manufactured from ethylene monomers polymerized at high density to produce a tough, lightweight material. Known for its excellent chemical resistance and near-zero moisture absorption, HDPE material is a first-choice engineering thermoplastic wherever corrosion, wet environments, or aggressive media are a concern.
HDPE combines strong impact resistance with good abrasion resistance and consistent dimensional stability, making it reliable in applications that see repeated mechanical stress. Its low density keeps finished components lightweight without sacrificing durability, an important advantage in marine fittings, tank components, and load-bearing wear parts. The material maintains stable mechanical properties across a broad temperature range and resists most acids, bases, and solvents encountered in industrial settings.
Fabrication. HDPE machines cleanly using standard tooling — sawing, routing, drilling, and turning all produce good results. It does not require pre-drying before machining, and its near-zero moisture uptake means parts hold size after fabrication. HDPE can be welded using hot-gas or extrusion welding techniques for tank and liner construction.
Ready Plastics stocks HDPE in sheet and rod for direct-from-stock machining or fabrication. Common applications include chemical tank liners, cutting boards, marine dock components, wear strips, and general-purpose structural parts. Frequently Asked Questions
HDPE, answered
What is HDPE plastic?
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic valued for its excellent chemical resistance, impact toughness, and very low moisture absorption. It is widely used in industrial, marine, and outdoor applications where corrosion resistance and durability are required.
What chemicals is HDPE resistant to?
HDPE resists most dilute and concentrated acids, alkalis, alcohols, and many organic solvents. It is not suitable for use with aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated solvents, or strong oxidizing acids. Always verify compatibility with your specific media using a chemical resistance chart.
